Overview
The Section on Epidemiology, founded in
1988, is dedicated to educating general pediatricians and pediatric
subspecialists on the basic principles of epidemiology and its relation
to pediatrics and its various disciplines. In addition, the section
consults to the AAP Board of Directors and works with various AAP
committees, task forces, and work groups to provide methodological
support and expertise in epidemiology and evidence-based medicine.
Mission Statement
The
mission of the Section on Epidemiology of the AAP is to improve the health of children
through the application of epidemiologic principles to the practice
of pediatrics and public health.
Vision
It is the vision of the Section on Epidemiology of the AAP that
pediatric and public health decision making will increasingly be
based on high quality research evidence; this will improve the health
of children.
Strategic
Approach
The Section serves its members and the pediatric and public
health community by providing the knowledge necessary to achieve
this mission. The Section
fosters epidemiology-based methods of clinical and policy-level
observation, interpretation, and decision making.
These methods are based on the best evidence of validity
and effectiveness and may be applied to any pediatric field or specialty.
The focus of the work of the Section
on Epidemiology is in three major areas: advocacy, education and
service.
