Thomas W. Ross was appointed President of the Volcker Alliance in May 2016 and began his tenure in July. He remains President Emeritus of the 17-campus University of North Carolina having served as President from 2011-2016. Mr. Ross also serves as the Sanford Distinguished Fellow in Public Policy.

Tom Ross is President of the Volcker Alliance, a nonpartisan, nonprofit dedicated to the effective execution of public policies and rebuilding public trust in government He is also President Emeritus of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system. Tom Ross serves as the Sanford Distinguished Fellow in Public Policy at Duke University. Before his time as UNC System President, he was President of Davidson College. He’s served as a Superior Court judge and worked as an Assistant Professor of Public Law and Government at UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Government.

From an editorial Tuesday in the (Raleigh) News & Observer:
In hindsight, once Republicans now in charge of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors had decided to fire President Tom Ross in what has become a long-running embarrassment to the state’s university system, they simply could have announced, “The president has been associated with Democrats, and we’re Republicans, and so we’re firing him, and we could care less what people think.”
