Dr. Rimer is the author of over 270 peer-reviewed articles, 55 book chapters and six books, and serves on several journal editorial boards. She was the first woman and behavioral scientist to lead the National Cancer Institute’s National Cancer Advisory Board, a presidential appointment and was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2008. In 2011, she was appointed by President Obama to chair the President’s Cancer Panel. She has received many awards including, in 2013, the American Cancer Society’s Medal of Honor for her cancer control research.

When [former NCI Director] Richard Klausner recruited me, I was a full tenured professor at Duke with my own grants, including one on cancer risk communication that I had worked hard to obtain. I was very committed to the work I was doing to explore the potential of tailored print communications in health communication. I liked Duke and North Carolina and did not want to leave, and I made that clear for quite a while. As cliché-ridden as it may sound, Dr. Klausner appealed ultimately to my responsibility as a citizen, and this got my attention. After all, some people do have to agree to perform these leadership roles if we are going to make progress.
