Race and Ethnicity"

- To provide a framework for understanding the
concepts of race and ethnicity in conducting minority health research.
- To
understand how the constructs of race and ethnicity are hampered by methodological
limitations.
- To understand how the quality
of minority health research is affected by the methods used to determine race
and ethnicity.

- To
provide an understanding of how qualitative research methods are used at the Census
Bureau to improve data quality.
- To provide
an awareness that distinct subpopulations require uniquely tailored data collection
methods in order to ensure that good quality data are obtained.
- To
convey the idea that as our population becomes more heterogeneous along selected
dimensions such as nationality, language, and economic conditions collecting survey
and census data becomes more challenging.
- To
illustrate how the Census Bureau studied border communities (or colonias) during
Census 2000 in order to develop and improve data collection approaches.

present strategies for rectifying observed deficiencies in counting immigrants,

- To discuss some of the barriers in establishing research partnerships
between academic institutions and community-based organizations.

provide examples of effective academic and community partnerships.

define community participatory research and demonstrate the linkage between community
participatory research, community empowerment and social action.

- To illustrate the concept of community participatory research
and academic partnerships from the perspective of a community-based organization
- To provide the importance of health as a tool
for community organizing and grassroots mobilization.
