“Vic is the best professor I have at this university. He really cares about his students and is an inspirational instructor.”

“At this point I think it is hard to rate each individual because only 2-3 people have facilitated a lab. So there may be stricter criticism for the facilitators at this point.”
(1st peer evaluation, Classroom course, 2005/09/21)

“I think that we need to have more examples in our lecture's. I think its really hard to learn the expected week's work of quantitative material that were are given. I feel the material is given to us and not taught. I know that we can not create anymore lab times but maybe we could create a help session for people that need specific help each week?”

“Before I took Epid 160, I had heard dreadful things about the labs from other international students. Frankly I was not particularly looking forward to being in a lab session. To my surprise my lab sessions have been really great from the suportive environment created by the TA to the supportive and dynamic group experiences. I think my best part of Epid 160 is the lab sessions”

“I like the mood of the class- its fun! But sometimes it seems that what we do in lecture just repeats what we read in the book.”

“I have been assigned to a great group!! Although we are still getting to know one another, I feel comfortable speaking up and sharing (even incorrect answers) during out group discussions.”

“I am really enjoying this course! It is helping me to look at my research through a more informed lens.”

“This was tough. I learned that I do not know my group members names as well as I thought I did! Maybe I need to match the names with faces a bit more. It took me forever to separate who was who in my mind!”

“My discussion group is enjoyable. I like the way that everyone is respectful, and the way that our backgrounds effects the way we answer some of the questions. My group is also well balanced. Usually someone will have the right answer and is able to communicate how he/she arrived to that answer.”

“These forums help me feel connected to some classmates and the TA. Otherwise I think I would feel isolated and less confident that I am one the same page as others.”

“So far the course is moving at a relatively good pace and I am taking in more information than I ever have in a related course such as biostatistics or health planning and research design. I am certain that I will complete this course with a wealth of information that I will be able to use in the workplace. Also, I find it very helpful to have an assigned TA to oversee many of the assignments.”

“Had a little trouble with the scale for group members who have not participated as much. The descriptions on the scale for preparation and support do not really make sense if a member just hasn't participated that much.”

“It's difficult for me to evaluate whether a student is well-prepared (i.e. has done the reading, etc) in the web-based class.”

“I have only been in this class about a month, and I find the material challenging, esp. the case studies. Last week I attended the Kansas Public Health Assoc. Conference and found myself able to ask presenters specific questions relating to their research, such as biases and incidence and prevalence material. Being able to ask intelligent questions to PhD. candidates validated my reasons for attending UNC. I feel I am getting the best education, and really enjoy the expertise of my fellow colleagues.”

“The convenience and opportunities that are provided by an internet formatted course cannot be undervalued, but I do feel as if I am missing an important part of the on-campus feel with the case studies. I feel a lot of learning and sharing occurs in the classroom style discussion of the assignments. I must admit Dr. Schoenbach e-mails about attending the discussions makes me feel the same way as when the central office in Topeka sends out a blanket e- mail stating doughnuts and goodies are available in the break room - (sorry field staff). But I truly am happy to have the opportunity to take the course, and know there is always an upside with the down and the discussion forum is a wonderful benefit.”
Mary, CERT student, FEPI, TA: Martha (1st peer evaluation, Internet course, 2005/09/24)

“Appreciate the peer evaluation requirement for this course. It has made me take a better look at the forum discussions, and see who is saying what and from what perspective. I am learning a great deal. The format and resources for the course are great.”
Clint, CERT student, FEPI, TA: Suzanne (1st peer evaluation, Internet course, 2005/09/27)

“I really appreciate this course, what I'm learning, the supportive interactions with Professor Schoenbach and our TA-Suzanne and of course, my group. What a really nice way to learn Epidemiology.”

“You will notice that I gave everyone who made an effort to participate in the discussion forums a 5. I feel that a rating any lower would not be a fair assessment. A one sentence comment sometimes is just as effective as a two paragraph submission. In addition, I am not exactly sure except for one forum who the discussion leaders were. Some didn't identify themself and I don't have a schedule of facilitators. For those people, I put not yet.”
(1st peer evaluation, Internet course, 2005/09/23)

“I am happy that our group has a great TA. Suzanne help us understand the case materials and her comment to case study questions enabled me to further understand the case materials.”

“Q 1 : How are things going so far in this course? Please include any comments about improvements or things that you like or don't like. (Your response is anonymous.) [from module on Natural history / Population screening]

My initial response is that I miss the classroom environment, but like everything new, it just takes a little getting used to. it feels a little like I have to prove that I'm in the class by participating as much as possible in the discussion forum. this feels like an intense summer course that you have to attend everyday. but I'm learning and enjoying the experience so far.”

“It seems to be going well. I am still confused a bit about grading and how you know how you are doing.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/14/2005)

“I think that the course is going very well. some of the concepts so far I am familiar with but my understanding has been solidified. I am enjoying the course and it has already helped me in better understanding the journal articles that I already have to read for my research!”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/14/2005)

“I am having trouble with the calculations and anticipate great difficulty on the exams. I would appreciate straight forward explanations on the various ways to do the calculations so that I can reference them to do a problem.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/15/2005)
______________________________

“I like this course but I am not sure if there is a way for someone to better explain formulas. sometimes the book does not make it obviously clear. For example, learning to calculate person-time years, months, etc. is tricky as well as cumulative incidence. Thanks.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/15/2005)

“I do think that by the end of a module, I have thoroughly learned the subject matter. I am spending more time than projected when reading about the course, however, and it will get heavier still. I must admit, I was unprepared for the amount of work involved. I was surprised at how case study number three took me through a very thorough analysis of the case. the questions themselves provided guidance. when we do our final paper, I am sure we will not have that. I hope that I will be ready.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/15/2005)

“Going well. I am learning a lot and am challenged, but not overwhelmed, by the material both quantity and substance.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/15/2005)

“The hardest thing for me is finding the time to sit down and read and comprehend and complete all of the items needed to comprehend the material. This is my second class, but the first one during an actual semester. I teach at a mid-size university and have 4 classes a semester. So usually my time in the evenings is devoted to grading papers and course prep. Now it is devoted to Epid 160. So for me, it is a time management issue. as for the course, the material is interesting, but I bet the live class is more stimulating. this information leads itself to discussion. Yes, we have the discussion forum, but we really don't get to here the professors take on the subject matter.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/15/2005)

“For better or worse, this class seems to require more time and energy than other classes I have taken in the certificate program. I am feeling a little overwhelmed by this.

It would be helpful to me if you could present some problems and work through them in your slides. While I understand the definitions of things and the formulas, picking out the information properly from an article or presented case proves to be more difficult for me.

Thanks”

“I feel the lectures are great. I do struggle with the case studies, but feel I gain understanding from them. I'm glad that you do not grade these on correct answers, but participation. I do like the discussion groups.”

“This is the second time I am taking this course. the last time over I took the regular epid 160 at unc. I feel I am learning much more this time (although the course itself seemed easier the last time around esp the case studies)vic is a great teacher (I wish he had taken Epi 160 the lst time I took it - may be I would have understood epi better).”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/16/2005)

“Great course. Very interesting. I only wish I could read more. the greatest thing about this course is the diversity of backgrounds. I have no criticisms whatsoever.”

“Well, I am really quite nervous still about my ability to complete an on line course and degree program. I am always concerned about whether I am utilizing my computer correctly and I think that I am over and under analyzing at times. I am finding a system that I think works for me and also find myself looking forward to the discussion groups, which was something that I did not think that I would like.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/16/2005)
______________________________

“What I like most so far is 1)the instructor and ta all reply my e-mails promptly; 2)text book is a good selection; 3) reading some articles published on peer-journal is always good to apply what I have studied; 4) TA is flexible on deadline for case study and group leader assignment under special circustances. what I don't like or less like is that 1) courseback material on "population perspective" is too long to complete reading in one week in addition to reading chapter 4 and 5. 2) discussion forum is good way for interaction among group members. Although discussion should be encouraged, numbers of email sent from each person should be approriately controlled. some messages like "that is a good point" and "that point was well described and well said" or simply one setence to agree with what the prior person said, may not be necessary. Otherwise, the numbers of e-mails are too overwhelming. 3) the communication e-mail from instructor should be concise, clear, and short. 4) grading is not timely enough. students are asked for a deadline for case study. It's fair enough to ask TAs a deadline for grading toward each case study question.”

“Things are going well so far. on occasion, I do have a hard time keeping up with all the reading. my job is the type where sometimes I do have to take work home with me and it can be difficult at times to balance both. otherwise I am learning”

“I am really enjoying the course thus far. it makes me think about concepts and ideas that I traditionally have not considered since I was not in this field.”

“It has been an adjustment to be in school again after so many years. I am having to relearn how to learn and devote time to it. but I've enjoyed the course so far. the math/numbers ideas have been difficult for me to grasp, so any examples or further practice questions would be helpful. I do the questions in the text book, but having futher explaination in the lecture might be helpful. thanks”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/17/2005)

“I think things are going very well in the course. I have been impressed with the organization of the content, clarity of expectations, and course layout. Epid 160 has been well thought-out, and it shows.”

“So far I feel that things are going pretty good. the biggest concern that I have is that I work fulltime and hope that there is some flexibility for the exams and final paper deadlines. I am going to start on the final paper at the earliest possible opportunity. thanks.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/18/2005)

“So far I think the course is going quite well. the website is extremely well laid-out and the weekly work and assignments are always easy to understand and find.

The only thing I have found confusing so far is when the discussion forums begin and end. I'm not sure if commments I am sending on Sunday are included in the final summary sent to the ta.”

(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/18/2005)
______________________________

“This course is much harder for me than previous courses I have taken in the certificate program. the hardest thing for me is figuring out all of the terminology, which varies slightly from the lecture to the readings to the case studies, and so I am spending probably the majority of my time in this class on definitions and trying to grasp the differences between different terms.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/18/2005)
______________________________

“Things are going well. it has taken a week to get used to the internet course since there is no introductory packet. A suggestion would be maybe to include one with the coursepacket for the internet course”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/18/2005)
______________________________

“Instructor and t.a. are readily accessible. the lectures and textbook are quite interesting and fairly easy to comprehend, but the case study coursepak is extremely rigorous and the case study questions are not clear and concise which makes the work challenging. I am spending 24-30 hours a week in epid”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“I think the course is really well designed and thought out. my particular group is very interactive and inciteful, great and varied background so th ediscussion board is always busy. my trouble is completely time management, work, school, family... so what else is new. no complaints about the course, content, faculty or fellow students.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“I appreciate that the schedule is consistent (e.g., readings due by monday, case study due by wed, ect.). this enables me to 'keep organized' in terms of what's due when in the class.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“To tell you the truth, I'm really struggling to keep up with the reading, the case studies, tutorials and the discussion threads. I'm fairly well organized about timelines, but I'm having trouble (spending hours) answering the case study questions. I think I understand the concepts when I read the text and listen to the tutorials, but when I try to answer the questions, I begin to question my intelligence! I think I am spending about 20 hours a week on this course and becoming a bit difficult to be around. I know that I have learned lots, but the condensed time frame has been difficult. it has been ages since I attended university and the blackboard program is new to me, as well. I keep hoping it will get easier? thanks!”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“I think the actual tutorials and readings are very easy to understand, but some of the calculations that we are expected to do are confusing seeing as we are not necessarily given the procedure on how to go about doing this. maybe this is because I am a "book" person, but just a thought.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“Overall, the course is okay. epidemiology is a really interesting topic and I feel it could be made more exciting. I think that the case studies and discussion forums are too much busy work. you should make the case study questions the discussion forum.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“I'm struggling with the course. I've had a difficult time adjusting to internet classes. I read all of the assigned reading and find my self going back to try and comprehend the information. I have referred to two additional epidemiology books which seem to offer better explanations for me. the course is very interesting but very time consuming. I feel like I am just completing an assignment when another begins - I can't seem to get ahead. my ta has been very responsive in terms of responding to me with whatever questions, e-mails I have and that has made a difference.

I am committed to completing the course but will re-evaluate at the completion of the semester if this is the right fit for me.”

(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“Things has been going well (since I found out that we would all get 10's for the second case study). I'm starting to get use to where everything is on the website and time limits. my ta is helpful in giving advice about where I missed points on case studies.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“I have nothing to compare this course with so... I can only tell how I feel with this course - old and slow! with the different committments I have, I need to be online late and my work keeps me from making entries early in the day. I fear this will negatively affect my final grade. I try to respond to the questions without looking at what others write - so I can determine if I am on the same page. I have been, but then I wonder if the group thinks "boring" or if I am really contributing anything beneficial to the group process. I really don't think I know enough to not know enough at this point! thanks.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“I still am getting the hang of juggling work/business travel/ and classwork, but enjoy the opportunity. the texts are good, but I would have more confidence that I really could apply the material w/ more problems to solve (on my own, not for credit!) my ta stated he would look for more intro level problems to share w/ me (hopefully I will get those soon.... I really need to *get* the material the week it is assigned with this load). I enjoy the discussion forum's comfortable feeling, but it is not as substantive as I'd like. I don't feel very stimulated by most reponses. it is difficult to accomplish the case study by wednesday each week, given my work schedule. because I travel, I spend most weekends doing paperwork, and it is hard to fit in the reading/prep then. I wish there were more applications to the lessons we were learning, so we could see how to integrate everything...maybe that will come over time. I am very pleased with opportunity to take coursework like this--it is the only way I could pull it off (if, in fact, I can).”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“Not well. this course is taking more time than I expected (more than any other course I've taken in the certificate program) and I am having difficulty keeping up.

Having said that, I do like the lectures and readings.

I have found the TA's comments about our small group discussions to be deflating and discouraging when we do not stick strictly to the question at hand.”

(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/19/2005)
______________________________

“I have had a few questions for my ta that has taken her about a week to get back to me on. I would appreciate it if she could get back to me sooner.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/20/2005)
______________________________

“This course is intense. I would be helpful to have a better idea about what is important and what is not. I am not sure how this can be accomplished, but sometimes the relationships that are explained in the model case study responses, don't match with the question.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/20/2005)
______________________________

“So far so good. just trying to catch up with the readings and implementation with the case study.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/20/2005)
______________________________

“I'm learning a lot but I think some of the case study questions assume an understanding and knowledge base in epi that I just don't have. this is especially true of some of the inferences”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/20/2005)
______________________________

“This is a very difficult course compared to the others that I have taken so far. much more time consuming than biostatistics. however, it is very interesting. I think it's the amount of resources and websites and blackboard sites and help that actually make it so overwhelming. I'm always afraid that I'm missing or forgetting something.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/20/2005)
______________________________

“I am really getting alot out of the course. I like the reinforcement that comes from getting the information from several sources: the text, notes, lectures, case study questions, etc. and then the forum is giving me a good picture of the real world, by reading others comments.”
(HowAreThings1, Internet course, 09/20/2005)
______________________________

“So far I am really enjoying the readings and the discussions. the readings give me a lot to sink my teeth into. however, I am big time hating the math parts. I haven't had biostatistics yet - but that isn't much of an excuse for me. percentages and such are not my strong suit. if possible, I would like to have the option of practice questions that we can then get the answers for in the case of the math problems. for this week's assignments, all of the practice questions dealt with the more written rather than the mathematical issues. thanks very much!”

“I think the course is good. some of the case study questions have been somewhat difficult and seem to cover material at a much greater level of depth than what is in the text or lecture. as a distance learning course I thought the course would be more flexible in regards to time committment throughout the week - its sometimes difficult to try to monitor the discussion group daily for 5 days.”

“Things are going well, I think. it's taken our discussion group a few weeks to really get off the ground, but I think we're doing just fine now. in retrospect, I really should have brushed up on my math skills before taking this course. I enjoy listening to the lectures. I think everything works well together. at this point, the only problem I have had is that all the emails from the certificate program office told me that the course wouldn't be available on blackboard until the 30th. when I logged on (on the 30th), I discovered that everything had been available for a week and I was now basically a week behind. I think I've finally caught up, but it was a real struggle to do so. other than that, everything is good.”

“Love the course, very interesting topics and the materials are great. it's nice to be able to learn the material through reading the chapters, viewing the slides and listening to the lecture. I appreciate the flexibility the instructor and ta's (karminder) have shown.”

“Sorry, I forgot to fill this out as I put all my comments regarding the course at the end of the ta evaluation. hope that is okay. just have some concerns about workload and expectations, ability to complete assignments and being able to absorb the concepts. the class is well presented, although sometimes the case study questions are not very clear to me. the class must be a large amount of work for all the instructors and tas, as the workload seems like a lot on my end, and there are so many students in the class. looking forward to a successful semester. thanks.”

“I love the course. it is well organized and everything works well on blackboard. in previous internet courses that I took, a lot of time was spent in contacting the teachers to clarify this or that. blackboard was only used for copies of reading material. basically, all I had was a self-study course and test proctors.

The online discussion groups are great. i.m learning a lot from my classmates and they don.t make me feel too dumb. online lectures are very convenient. I stop, start, and replay as needed. the powerpoint slides are an easy way to go back and look something up.

My time management is the thing that is plaguing me the most.

I have to learn not to put everything off until the last minute in case I need help. (wednesday at midnight is a bad time to realize that). linda, my ta, even worked with me there by giving me an extension when I needed more time to figure out some notes of encouragement always seem to come at the right time. just when I need it, a suggestion, joke, or an answer to a question that I have not asked comes from dr. schoenbach. he must have done this before!!!”

“The course was okay. I thought it was extremely unfair that the Tuesday group had to complete a case study when the Wednesday group did not. Either Teusday should have ben cancelled or the Wednesday group should have had to turn in answers to the case study. The lecture for group was the same as Vic's lecture. We do not need the same info twice in 1 hour. Very difficult to complete some case studies as they are due immediately after the material is presented.”

“Vic--you seem like a sweetheart and I thought it was so dear when you teared up on the first lecture while discussing how you met your wife and again on the last lecture when you were saying your goodbye. Best wishes, you're a kind, patient teacher with a great sense of humor. Happy Holidays! Jaime--thanks for your patience with the group. You were kind and helpful and I'm glad I got your group! Congratulations on finishing up your studies--best wishes, I'm sure you'll do well in whatever you choose to do post graduation! Happy Holidays!”

“I really enjoyed the lab discussions; however I don't think it was fair that the Tuesday sections had to attend lab on two more occasions than the Wednesday sections. Perhaps there is a better way to handle this...”

“It is more difficult for faciliators during the last few weeks and during weeks when there are exams out. If there is any way to avoid having students faciltate on these days it would seem to be easier to evaluate their job as a facilitator.”

“I enjoyed this class and found the topics very useful and related to my reasearch. One thing I didn't agree with is the disclaimer that "There may not be one right answer". Often times for most questions there is one right answer and I think this disclaimer helps gloss over things if one is unclear and lead to a less rigorous discussion.”

“I don't feel I can really assess my group mates properly especially as I was not fully there but generally I felt I had a great group that tried to be very inclusive in the work and supportive of its members. Group members worked hard to ensure everyone was on the same page. I'm sure my group contributed a lot to whatever understanding i had of the course because of the patient explanations and willingness to carry everone along. I had dreaded EPI 160 especially the group lab because my colleagues who did the course last year had negative feedback about the lab, but my experience was surprisingly different. I felt the lab was my best part of the course from the TA session to the group work. I know that any kind of achievement I make in the course is because I had a great TA and a good lab group.”

“The answers to the case study questions tended to be long and detailed while exam answers were restricted by word limits. Though the use of word limits is perfectly understandable, given the size of the class, trying to give the same level of detail in exam answers was difficult to do with the word limits. Giving some examples in the case study answers as to what would be an acceptable short answer to the question before giving all the details maybe useful for some students.”

“I have enjoyed the structure and content of EPID 160. The final lab discussion was most enjoyable to me because it coerced us to talk about things that do not have a clear answer. I wish that we would have had more case study questions and discussions like that. I am disappointed that some of my group members did not participate more. Some started to participate more towards the end of the semester, after receiving unsatisfactory evaluations and upon realization that participation was a big part of the course grade. Or, they would participate more if they noticed that Vic had entered the room. I am also disappointed with my exam grades. I know that I have a good understanding of almost all EPID concepts that we learned as well as the articles used for the exam. I am worried that a low grade will not reflect my understanding of the material.”

“Discussion is a great part of this class. I would have enjoyed more of a focus on this part of the section and less on the mini-lecture, maybe with more involvement of the TA and the professor for part of the discussion. I enjoyed lectures, but discussion was really the high point.”
(2nd peer evaluation, Classroom course, 2005/12/09)

“Despite what I think is a well studied and refined introductory course, I find the material was difficult to learn as fully as I would have in a classroom where some questions would have helped me clarify the material better than only having a TA for that purpose. I believe this is due to the difficulty of conceptualizing some of the designs and application of epidemiology.”

“Course reflected some of the 'fault-lines' which exist between epi and biostatistics -- on the one hand, perhaps too much emphasis on study designs while at the same time too little recognition of the value of statistical analysis -- perhaps more attention to 'adjustment' or 'normalization' of populations; population characteristics and categories (e.g., racial/ethnic designations; behavioral characteristics of populations; housing; unconventional demographic characteristics -- grandparent - granchild households, split households, legal vs social relationships; social networks). Instructors were extraordinarily invested in this course -- and in student performance -- Vic and Bob both outstanding.”

“Bob did a wonderful job as our TA. His communication with me and the group was always motivating and he responded quickly and thoroughly to any problems or questions I had throughout the semester. “This was a difficult class because of the shear volume of information and activities involved. I enjoyed it though it wasn't at all what I expected. Each on-line course I take seems to have its own challenges but I always gain vast knowledge about the subject and learn something about myself at the same time.”

“The word limits on the exams are extremely frustrating. I sympathize with your grading load, but it is very difficult to properly address 3-5 questions (you may label them as sub-questions, but they are often separate issues entirely) in 60-100 words. Yes, succinctness is valuable in writing, but not at the expense of thorough, complete coverage of an issue. I have two suggestions: 1) Reduce the number of subquestions by about one per question. OR 2) Increase the number of words allowed per question and use more graders. Furthermore, it seemed that the model answers for the exams sometimes exceeded the word limit given to the students. I didn't check this specifically, but it sure seemed that way.”

“I was extremely impressed by the organization of the online course of EPID 160. The lectures, case studies, exams and paper were invaluable teaching methods. As a first online course for me, it took me a while to get used to the discussion forums and I am afraid I did not take as much advantage of them as I could have. That was entirely my fault as the questions and issues for discussion were excellent. Thank-you to all the instructors, especially the group 9 instructor Linda, and to Vic. I would recommend this course to anyone!!”
Vifvan, CERT student, FEPI, TA: Linda (2nd peer evaluation, Internet course, 2005/12/05)

“The discussion forum for this class needs to be changed. Because the criteria for evaluation of the forums is so detailed, students give way too much information, and often post too much just so that they can get "all of the credit." I thought the point of the forum was to mimic a classroom. If that were so, one would raise his/her hand and give 1 or 2 facts then their opinion. In the forum, we applauded those who rattled off a ton of statistics. Perhaps I have missed the point, but I would have gotten more out of the forums if the discussion was more structured and if people were encouraged to share their thoughts, instead of bombarding you with their knowledge.”

“Just wanted to let you know that I'm glad you use PRB reference materials - my mother works there and was actually an editor of the bulletin we used in one of the first lectures. She was thrilled when i told her that you highlighted their work in the lecture. Because they provide many of their publications for a reduced or no cost, it is very important for them to get feedback on which publications are most useful. Please continue to let them know what a good job they do! thanks!”

“I know the idea of having case studies due on Wednesdays and then the discussion running from Thursday to Monday was probably to intended to spread homework out over the week, but, frankly, I found it very confusing: I would submit the case study early in the week and then completely forget about the discussion group...having everything start on Mondays - even if the due dates remain different to help the TAs spread out their workload - would be more logical and easier to remember. Also, while I suppose the discussion group assignments might help a bit in learning public health concepts, I really felt that compared to the case studies they were pretty useless in helping students come to grips with the concepts and tools of epidemiology.”

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to take this class. I searched high and low for a way to study public health while I was living in Egypt and couldn't find any good options, but when I learned of the chance to take the online diploma through UNC I knew I had to try it. Epidemiology has exceeded my expectations and I am so glad to have been a part of it. Ciao, arrevederci, aurevoir, kwa heri, maasalama, anyungheekaseyo! (Bye-bye)”
