Student comments from EPID160 Summer 2005

This is by far the best discussion group that I have ever participated
in. The discussions are direct, relevant, and helpful and everyone
is extremely supportive. It really helps eliminate that feeling
of "ugh, if I post this someone will think I'm an idiot"
at least if they think you ARE an idiot, they don't show it
;-) The directness of the discussions makes it much easier
to keep up with them on a weekly basis without feeling bogged
down by hundreds of posts to trudge through. I think this group
really supports an environment of thoughtfulness and brainstorming
that is the ideal for a discussion group.

I feel uncomfortable evaluating my group members so soon. I've
just begun to get to know them and understand their perspectives.
I could be easily overlooking some aspect of their comments.

I am enjoying the variety of comments in the group and there
is so much enthusiasm!

This is my last course for the Certificate program, and I wish
I had taken it first. So much that I have learned this past
year all seems to be coming together and making MORE sense.
I really appreciate Dr. S. and his team's teaching methods.
Good textbook; relevant articles; precise tutorials. Lots of
reading, no doubt, but all for the good of mankind.

Two things: First, it's difficult to rate everyone given that
we've only completed 2 real discussions so far; Second, it
seems to me that the "Attendance" rating could be performed
by the TA since it's simply a count of how many postings each
person made - this would be more efficient rather than making
each person in the group visually search through long lists
of postings to add up totals for each person...in each discussion.

I would like to see more comments from the TAs and the instructors
on the group's discussion board. More "real life" examples
and "hard data" on the problem-solving assignments.

This is the most interactive discussion group I've participated
during my course studies. I enjoy reading the comments and
thoughts of others in our group. Group 7's backgrounds and
experience are very diverse and therefore lend to many fresh
perspectives. Discussion forums can be tedious, but I'm finding
this one quite stimulating.

Everyone in Group 8 is very interesting and I enjoy the forums.
I miss the face to face interaction of traditional school,
but it would be hard to get together so often as we live all
over the world.

Zewde's comments on case studies can be more helpful in complete
sentences. I'm not always sure I understand what she means
in her comments. She has been a great TA so far, very helpful
toward understanding the material.

These evals are to add to my previous submissions. Sorry to
be such a troublemaker! is there a difference at the bottom
of the eval form between the radio button Yes and the checkbox
Yes regarding replacing earlier submissions?

Epid 160, so far, is thought provoking and has given me a different
perspective of 'public health' than I have had in the past.

Daniel was a great TA and one of the best TA's I have had in
this program. Comments were contructive and had great turnaround
time. Lectures were very helpful. I learned a lot in this class
that will help me in my work at the Hospital. (Quality Improvement)
Evidence-based medicine is the future and understanding the
studies that support changes is beneficial.

I wonder if this class needs to be broken down into two classes...such
as the way an introduction to economics is done frequently
(macro and micro). Or there should be more credit hours, because
this class took a lot of time to do the course work.

These discussion forums have been the most carefully constructed
and balanced of any online-course forums in which I've participated
(and by now I've taken several, at different institutions and
in different courses of study). The topics were stimulating
and, at least in my group, everyone was prepared and involved.
Given that, it was still a relief not to be evaluated on the
strength of the group as a whole -- a shortcoming of other
virtual teamwork, which has so many more potential communication
pitfalls than other forms of teamwork. I'll miss the opportunity
to discuss these important public-health topics.

This was a very VERY busy summer session, but has been my best
class (although I am sure my grades may not reflect that).
I enjoyed the teaching style of Vic who was very thorough and
also very responsive to questions. I also appreciate Ella's
(TA) contributions and patience. Most especially, I am proud
to have been part of Group 5 which turned out to be a very
intelligent and clear-thinking group of students. I learnt
a lot from participating in this group.

A very important course for the MPH/MHA curriculum. Internet
learning can be difficult and I would have liked to see some
"Live" forums with verbal dialogue perhaps via Edufolio.
There were many concepts with varying levels of difficulty
proffered in this course that would have benefitted the student
with some more timely personal attention. All in all, though,
it is a good course and Dr. S. definately has a wonderful sense
of humor.

I appreciate the understanding and patience Vic and Sangmi
have given me this semester. They have been very willing to
work with me during a busy time and traveling with work. I
enjoyed the forums when I was able to participate, however,
I have to admit that I prefer the traditional classroom setting.
I miss the face to face interaction and getting to know people
and learn more about what they do in public health. But I understand
the need for web education and forum in this expanding world
of technology and efficiency.

I really enjoyed the class. It was quite a lot of work, but
I can now read journal articles with a completely new perspecitve.
I really wish I had exposure to this interesting subject earlier
in my clinical career.
