Mozambique and President Joachim Chissano
Joachim Chissano was president of Mozambique during the 1990s and is credited with helping to end the civil war and bringing peace to the country. He learned TM on the recommendation of Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia and soon thereafter had his family, his cabinet, and the military and police take up the practice. In 2007 Chissano received the first Mo Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership, following his selection by a Prize Committee chaired by former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan.
