A staff member in the Department of Epidemiology at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health, she worked with legendary faculty, including Professor Carl M. Shy.
Born in Livingston, New Jersey, Joy received her B.S. from Wake Forest and an M.S. from Florida State University. She met and married her husband Tom in Nashville, Tennessee, where she worked for an educational project sponsored by Peabody College. A year later she and Tom moved to Chapel Hill, where she worked as a research programmer in the Department of Epidemiology in the UNC school of public health. She and Tom also raised their son Michael. Joy retired from UNC in 2010.
Joy has been a longtime member of Binkley Baptist church and has volunteered there and at the Interfaith Council of Chapel Hill and Carrboro.
