• Award-Winning Film Traces Global Roots of Southern Healthcare
  Margo Lakin, Trinity Communications, July 16, 2025. Karin Shapiro's powerful documentary, A Road Out, earned Best Historical Film at the Toronto International Women Film Festival. Uncovering a surprising connection between rural South Africa (more) and the American South (more), the film traces how community health models that were developed during the 1940s and early 1950s helped lay the groundwork for public health efforts in the United States following World War II. • Fulbright Connects
  Video Dialog, Inc. Steven A. Channing, writer/producer; Karin Shapiro, co-producer/academic consultant. 2022?   Using the Fulbright Program as a case study, we seek to examine the role and success of international exchange programs as a means of fostering international understanding and as a buttress to multilateralism. In the midst of the Cold War, hundreds of thousands of Fulbrighters traveled either to or from the United States. These exchanges of young people and faculty touched the four corners of the globe, enlivening the pursuit of academic knowledge and deepening cultural understanding.
• John Henry Lives On: Sherman James and the John Henryism (21 min.)
  2018. Epidemiologist Sherman James explores the startling effects of discrimination on the wellbeing of African Americans. He explains how the stressors induced by racial and economic oppression not only circumscribed opportunities, but also adversely affected people’s physical health. • Karin Shapiro Receives Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching Award
  September 25, 2018. Shapiro teaches a range of courses on the histories of the American South and South Africa, with a focus on race and social justice. She was nominated by students, who praised her ability to evoke challenging discussions in her lectures and who connected modern events to the concepts and histories discussed in the class.
