• Dean E. Smith Distinguished Citizen Award
  This award is presented to recognize outstanding contributions to North Carolina while exemplifying the values found in the Scout Oath and Law. The Award will be presented at a Dinner on April 8, 2025 at The Carolina Club, 150 Stadium Dr., Chapel Hill, NC 27514. Paul Fulton, Founder and Chair, PublicEdWorks, will also receive the Dean E. Smith Distinguished Citizen Award on this occasion. Both Paul Fulton and Howard Lee served on the Event Committee for the inaugural Dean E. Smith Distinguished Citizen Award, presented to Coach Roy Williams on November 28, 2023 (archival page). The award is given by the Occoneechee Council, one of the largest and most prominent youth development organizations in North Carolina; the Council provides young people in Chatham, Cumberland, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Lee, Moore, Orange, Vance, Wake and Warren Counties with responsible fun and adventure while instilling in them lifetime values and ethical character development as expressed by the Scout Oath and Law.   UNC announced on March 18 that four individuals will receive honorary degrees for outstanding accomplishments in public service, dance and community service at the spring commencement ceremony.
  On May 11, Deitre Allen Epps, Howard Lee and Richard Stevens will receive Doctor of Law degrees, and Michelle Dorrance will receive a Doctor of Arts degree.
  Lynn White Blanchard, chair of the Honorary Degrees and Special Awards Committee, said the process of selecting recipients starts with nominations. . . .

• Howard and Lillian Lee Honored at Transit Center Naming Ceremony

  On Monday, June 20, the Town of Chapel Hill named the transit facility on Millhouse Road in honor of Howard and Lillian Lee. Howard Lee, a former state senator and the town’s first Black mayor, was instrumental in the formation of Chapel Hill Transit in 1974.

  The town government held a dedication ceremony Monday morning to officially announce and unveil plans for the Howard and Lillian Lee Transit Operations Center. The former mayor began the local transit system shortly after being elected in 1969, and his wife is a long-time advocate and user of Chapel Hill Transit.
