- Bill Jenkins and Jim Murrell recount experiences from the 1970s
Bill Jenkins, the first African American doctoral student to enroll in the UNC Department of Epidemiology, and Jim Murrell (the first African American professional staff member of the department and later a graduate student in the Department of Biostatistics), were both key figures in the UNC School of Public Health's Black Student Caucus (later renamed Minority Student Caucus) during the 1970s. They created a "survival committee" to assist students having difficulty with the required biostatistics and epidemiology courses. Victor Schoenbach recorded a segment of their conversation when they met up on May 11, 2018 during a visit by Bill to Chapel Hill. (More about the "Survival Committee" at http://go.unc.edu/EPIDhistory).
