• Paul Cornely Award
  Michael Bird received the Paul Cornely Award at the 2024 Health Activist Dinner at APHA. Dr. Cornely was the first African American to serve as president of APHA, in 1970. Thirty years later, in 2001, Michael Bird served as the first American Indian president of APHA. Also at APHA this year, Michael received an Impact Award from the APHA Integrative, Complementary, and Traditional Health Practices section.

  Michael E. Bird (Kewa Pueblo/Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo) has over 25 years of public health experience in the areas of medical social work, substance abuse prevention, health promotion and disease prevention, public health policy, HIV/AIDS prevention, behavioral health, and health care administration. Mr. Bird is the first American Indian and social worker to serve as President (2000–2001) of the American Public Health Association. In 2018, he received an Influential Alumni Award from UC Berkeley School of Public Health in recognition of significant contributions to the field of public health.

  When Michael E. Bird, M.S.W., M.P.H. ’83 was inaugurated president of the American Public Health Association (APHA)—the oldest and largest organization of public health professionals in the world—it represented a milestone. Bird, who is a Santo Domingo-San Juan Pueblo Indian from New Mexico, was the first American Indian ever to lead the high-profile association. A member of APHA for more than 15 years, he chaired the organization’s executive board from 1998 to 1999, served as president-elect in 2000 and president in 2001. [page not found 11/17/2024]
