In memoriam

It is with great sadness that we report that after a long illness, Dr. Ada Adimora, Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicine, and Epidemiology has passed.
Ada worked at UNC as a national and international leader for more than three decades. She was committed to improving the care of underserved populations and she was a tireless and fearless advocate for women living with HIV and at risk for HIV.
Ada was loved and admired by all those she touched, and her loss leaves a gap that cannot be filled.
We will miss Ada and her creativity, warmth, passion, and courage.
We will update you about local arrangements, and we will celebrate Ada and her contributions more broadly in the spring.

Floris-Moore to Deliver Norma Berryhill Distinguished Lecture (67 min.), Thursday, June 20, 2024. The Norma Berryhill Distinguished Lecture was delivered by Michelle Floris-Moore, MD, MS in honor of Adaora A. Adimora, MD, MPH, who passed away this winter. Dr. Adimora was to deliver the Lecture in 2023 but was unable to do so due to illness.
Cristy Page MD, MPH introduced the Lecture and gave an appreciation of Dr. Adimora. Vani Vannappagari announced The Dr. Adaora Adimora Fellowship to train one infectious disease fellow and one epidemiology doctoral student each year. The fellowship is sponsored by ViiV Healthcare.
The Norma Berryhill Distinguished Lecture was established in 1985 to honor the medical school's "most able scientists and scholars." The lectureship is named after the Norma Berryhill, whose husband, Dr. Walter Reece Berryhill, was dean of the school from 1941 to 1964. Along with her husband, she is considered the co-founder of UNC's four-year School of Medicine.

Ada served as the Sarah Graham Kenan Distinguished Professor of Medicine at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A world-renowned physician epidemiologist, Ada dedicated her career to investigating and advocating for solutions to the pervasive racial and gender disparities heightened by the HIV epidemic. As a clinician, she provided unwavering and compassionate care to her patients. Ada departed this earth far too soon, on Monday, January 1, 2024, at age 67, surrounded by the love of her children and a wide circle of friends.
