Public health groups/organizations working to advance health of African Americans and other minorities

• Minority Student Caucus at the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health - Historical information is available at https://go.unc.edu/MSC.
  The Caucus was founded in 1971 and leads the annual Minority Health Conference, which it launched in 1977. Chandra Ford (https://go.unc.edu/ChandraFord) was active in the UNC Caucus for years. • Society for the Analysis of African American Health Issues (SAAPHI)
  Founded in 1991 to put health disparities and racism on the public health agenda, SAAPHI has been an influential organization working largely within the American Public Health Association (APHA). SAAPHI has an annual conference on the Saturday before APHA.  The virtual library folder on SAAPHI (https://go.unc.edu/SAAPHI) has programs and/or recordings from some of the conferences. 
   
• Black Caucus of Health Workers (BCHW)
  Founded in 1968, in 2018 BCHW celebrated its 50^th anniversary as a caucus within APHA. The virtual library folder about the Black Caucus is at (https://go.unc.edu/BCHW).
   
• Black Ladies in Public Health (BLIPH), which also has a private Facebook group.
  Founded in 2016 by Jasmine Ward, BLIPH received 501(c)3 status in 2019 and has over 16,000 students, community partners, and public health professionals.
      BLIPH, BCHW, and SAAPHI work together, often co-sponsoring activities at APHA.
   
• Minority Health Institute, Inc.
  Founded by Richard Allen Williams, MD in 1987, the Minority Health Institute is dedicated to the elimination of racial and ethnic disparities in medicine, the medical workforce, clinical research, health and healthcare.
   
• American College of Epidemiology Equity and Inclusion Committee (ACEEIC)
  The ACEEIC was originally created in 1991 by American College of Epidemiology President Raymond S. Greenberg as an ad hoc committee of the College. Its original name was the Committee on Minority Affairs, which several years later was changed to the Minority Affairs Committee (ACEMAC). The committee held its first meeting at the College's Annual Scientific Meeting in September 1991 in Atlanta. Bill Jenkins, who founded SAAPHI that same week in Atlanta was a founding member of both (for more about Bill, see https://go.unc.edu/BillJenkins).
  Following the 2024 ACE annual scientific meeting, the committee renamed itself the Equity and Inclusion Committee. The ACEEIC's virtual library folder, with links to documents and recordings from the committee's past, is at (https://go.unc.edu/ACEEIC). Since early in the 21st century, the ACEEIC has held a free workshop on the Saturday before the College’s annual scientific meeting. The workshops were initiated by Vickie Mays (https://go.unc.edu/VickieMays).
