Andre L. Brown, MPH, is currently a doctoral student in the Health Behavior and Health Education Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Gillings School of Global Public Health. Over the past decade, he has been involved in HIV prevention efforts directed primarily toward young Black gay men. Andre has served as research associate on a university-based HIV prevention project for young gay men of color, as an HIV prevention program coordinator for a community-based program in Chicago, and as an HIV Prevention Consultant for the Michigan Department of Community Health. Those experiences, in addition to studying abroad (South Africa) and chairing an HIV-prevention committee while an undergraduate at the University of Michigan, have helped to shape Andre's career aspirations in public health.

His primary professional goals include (1) developing HIV prevention and other health promotion activities that are holistic and address psychosocial facilitators of poor health among Blacks, (2) bridging the gap and building collaborative work efforts among government, academic, and community-based public health to collectively improve the health of populations, (3) utilizing community-based participatory research as a vehicle for developing sustainable health interventions and practices, and (4) developing strong process and outcome evaluation measures to assess the effectiveness of new and existing HIV prevention and health promotion programs. Andre believes that many of the answers to solving the HIV/AIDS crisis in the U.S. are known. He would like to be a part of a team that works to piece those answers together to develop the most effective and comprehensive HIV prevention strategy for the country. |
