Dr. Adaora Adimora is a physician-epidemiologist with specialty training and extensive clinical experience in infectious diseases, particularly HIV, both in North Carolina and New York City. She received her medical degree from the Yale University School of Medicine and completed specialty training at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx, NY. Prior to coming to UNC, she served as Assistant Chief for Science of the NC Health Department’s Communicable Disease Control Section.

An associate professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the UNC School of Medicine and a practicing clinician in the Infectious Diseases Clinic at UNC Healthcare, Dr. Adimora is nationally recognized for her research on concurrent sexual partnerships among heterosexual women and men in the U.S. and in rural North Carolina. She has published analyses on prevalence of concurrent sexual partnerships in the 1995 (women) and 2002 (men) National Survey of Family Growth, and has recently begun an investigation of contextual factors related to concurrent sexual partnership prevalence in the 2002 survey. Dr. Adimora has also published several conceptual analyses of societal factors that promote concurrent partnerships among African Americans.
