I. Introductions/ Announcements Attendance:

Rachel Davis, Sara Ackerman, Seronda Jackson, Vic Schoenbach, Chandra Ford, Aundra Sheilds, Barbara Chavious, Kyna McCullough, Sacoby Wilson, Maceo Thomas.

II. Conference Date:

Friday, March 1, 2002 at the Friday Center. Sherman James, from U. Mich HBHE has been confirmed as the keynote speaker. His talk will be entitled "Social Determinants of Health: Interventions to Address Racial and Ethnic Disparities".

Maceo will ask Sherman James for a brief three to four sentence description of his talk so that Vic can place it on the web.

There was discussion on the attendance issue. Barbara mentioned that the no-show list last year was mostly from UNC people. Questions were raised about possible venues that could be utilized ( Sheraton Inn, Rossi Center). Discussion of having more break-out sessions and having an overflow room for participants.

III. Timeline:

Barbara presented a timeline that is based on the marketing plan (postcard and conference brochure)

IV. Brainstorm objectives

a. What is unique about our conference?

b. How can we best serve all those participating?

General agreement to tweak last year's objectives for this year since many of the objectives are broad. It was mentioned that these are overarching goals of the conference from year-to-year.

Discussion of target audience touched on the challenges of incorporating science and practice to best reach our diverse audience.

IV.Brainstorm breakout sessions ideas

Discussion of objectives led to discussion of breakout sessions including the definition of social determinants of health, environmental racism, institutional racism, family and social structure, research methodology, theory, sexism, working conditions, homophobia and its impact on the AIDS epidemic in the Black community, social structure of masculinity and its impact on health; how does research relate to policy change, funding for interventions, poverty simulation
