Fran T. Close, Ph.D.Fran T.
Close, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of Behavioral Science and Health
Education in the Master of Public Health Program at Florida A&M University
(FAMU). Named the 2001 Teacher of the Year by the College of Pharmacy
and Pharmaceutical Sciences/Institute of Public Health, she teaches courses
such as “Current Issues in Women’s Health”,“Individual Health Behaviors”
and “Principles of Behavioral Science and Health Education”. Dr. Close
focuses much of her research on women’s reproductive health issues. Her
research includes maternal, child and infant health, abstinence education
and program evaluation. Dr. Close is an active member of the Racial Disparity
Taskforce for Infant Health, Capital Area Healthy Start Coalition (President-Elect)
and the Pregnancy Associated Mortality Review Committee. She is also the
co-producer of “It Concerns You…Issues in Public Health”, a FAMU-TV production.
Her current research involves working with communities in both Leon and
Gadsden Counties to address infant mortality issues. She holds a doctorate
degree in Pharmacology/Toxicology from FAMU and a Bachelor’s of Science
degree in Biological Science from Florida State University. She lives
in Tallahassee, Florida with her husband Billy and daughters, Nia and
