Cliff Akiyama, is a Ph.D. candidate in Criminology at the University of Pennsylvania, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the Jerry Lee Center of Criminology, Philadelphia, PA. He is also a Research Associate and Forensic Specialist in the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner, California, a Fellow in Head Injury and Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery Research at the University of Southern California, School of Medicine and Medical Center, Los Angeles and Deputy Sheriff in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Reserve Forces. He holds a M.A.in Bioethics and B.A in Philosophy and Sociology from University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA.

He is the recipient of Jay S. Drotman Memorial Award in Public Health in 1997, a prestigious national public health award given to a young health care worker or student under the age of 30, by the American Public Health Association [APHA], in recognition for "extraordinary leadership in youth violence prevention and research using a multidisciplinary approach". He is also the reciepient of the United States Congress--Gold Congressional Award in 1996, the highest and most prestigious national civilian award given by Congress to a young adult for outstanding achievement and service to the community and the nation.

His current research deals with Asian youth gang violence.
