Introduction

The primary single source of data for the U.S. as a whole is the National Center for Health Statistics, a unit of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Both have fully-developed web sites. Other web pages that provide descriptions of and/or easy access to national (and other level) datasets include:

The information about many of the national databases in the Catalog was obtained from agencies of the Public Health Service (PHS), which focuses on vital statistics systems, surveys, disease and treatment registries, surveillance systems, epidemiological research and program oriented system data. In a few instances, grant supported research projects of a statistical or epidemiological nature were also included.
