Course Absence Policy

EPID600 is taught over a 15-16 week semester, and the basic expectation is that all participants plan to be available to participate during that period. EPID600 tries to accommodate personal needs (e.g., illness, family illness, conferences, travel, planned vacations), but our ability to do so is constrained by class size and University rules.

Here are suggestions and requests:

  1. Inform your TA and group members in advance and, if applicable, remind them when the time arrives that you must be absent.
  2. Contribute what you can in advance. Most course materials are available so that you can work ahead of the schedule.
  3. If possible, arrange for someone else to cover responsibilities you may have been assigned (e.g., facilitating a small group discussion). If finding a substitute is not practical, please alert your group and TA as early as possible.
  4. Examinations are generally not available early. If you need an extension for a good reason, please submit the request form at www.unc.edu/epid600/students/request.cfm and explain the circumstances in the comment box. Doing so will give you an extension of at least 24 hours (and longer if your request is granted). (If you obtain an extension you must avoid conversations or group discussions that concern the examination and not view the instructor answers should they become available. Note that late submissions of the final paper - Exam 3 - may require a temporary grade of IN, as explained in the instructions for that assignment.)
