Community-Based Participatory Research
with American Indian and Latino Communities:
Epidemiologists in the Community
Historically, epidemiologic research was conducted
without input from the communities for whom the research is most needed in
order to improve health outcomes. In the last decade, communities and racial/
thnic minorities have demanded to be active participants in the design and
conduct of research essential to the health of their communities. Increasingly,
epidemiologists have adopted methodology that incorporates participation of
community members/organizations at various stages of the research effort,
including but not limited to design, implementation, and communication of
findings. This day-long workshop, which is free of charge to researchers,
community-based organizations and stakeholders in the health of Native American
and Latino communities, is designed to learn how the principles and techniques
of community-based participatory research can be integrated into epidemiologic
research.
